Time: February 14th 2008 to May 22nd 2008
Yarn: Opal Rainforest Flamingo DK
Needles: 2 x 2.75mm Knit Picks 60cm circulars
Stitches per inch: 8
Method & Modifications:
- Knitted two at a time cuff down. Separated after the heel turn & reunited after the gusset decreases.
- All knit stitches apart from those on the sole were knitted through the back loop to make the stitch 'pop' out.

Toe Up Socks - Help?

Has anyone used the toe-up instructions in the 12-stitch pattern section of SKS? I'm doing this for the fist time, and I am adding the instructions for the heel, flap, and gusset to a pair of socks that were written as top-down. The instructions are found on pages 59/60.

Hedgerow Socks (not an SKS pattern) knit toe-up

I'm not sure that the final fit will be correct, even though I've tried them on and it seems ok. My concern is that didn't have a point of refrence for how long I should have made the foot before starting the heel section. I'd love to hear about any experience others have had. These are to fit a size 10 1/2, and I started the heel after 8" of knitting on the foot.
Thanks for any guidance you can offer.

Crossover Rib socks

These socks have been a long time in the making (since November) but then most days I don't get to knit for more than about 10 minutes, and some days not at all...
I'm very happy with how they turned out though.

Diamonds Pattern, but not Socks

I used the Diamonds Pattern from mSKS to knit this doll sweater. It was a good learning experience, even if the sweater is "nothing to write home about". I used Knitpicks Pallet for the cream color and Knitpicks essential for the colors. Unfortunately the variegated colors are too bold, and don't work well with this sort of patterning, and the pallet had too much of a different "texture" to work well with the Essential. But learning is all part of the fun. And sharing is too. Maybe my attempt can motivate someone else to try, and succeed :-)

Method: Knitted cuff down two at a time.
Details: 8 stitches per inch for a 9" wide foot so I cast on 72 stitches. An 'Eye of Partridge Heel' for a very durable heel as they were a present for my MIL who is a keen walker.

Hi everyone! I need your help. Posted to the left is a picture of a sock I've started with Wildfoote Elderberry yarn. It's the BabyFern 12stitch pattern repeat from More Sensational socks. I don't like it. I think the pattern is lost with this colorway. I showed the sock to a girl at work and she agreed. What I need help with is suggestions. What pattern would you suggest for this yarn/colorway??? I prefer to knit cuff down with a heel flap/turn. I have both Sensational and More Sensational sock books. I would really love to find a pattern to do this colorway justice. This is the second time I've started a sock with it. Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Yarn: striped using 1 skein KnitPicks Essential in Ash, and 1 skein ka hand-dyed in color Vintage (which I found at a LYS near me).
Needles: Foot and ankle US1. Leg US1 1/2.
Construction: Toe up. One circular needle.

Slipstitch Ribs

Finally, another completed pair.

The stitch pattern is Slipstitch Rib, but I used the toe-up short row toe/heel "recipe" to maximize yarn. Paton's Kroy yarn, 2 skeins of the main color, about 1/2 a skein of the contrast. I loved the Slipstitch Rib; really easy, not too dull, and a nicely textured final result.

I have had this yarn it seems like since before time began. It is a Stahl yarn but the name escapes me since I didn't keep the band. The pattern is Slip Stitch Rib from SSS. My DH just made the socker blockers from wire hangers. The foot is big because their intended reciepent has large feet.

elongated corded rib in schaefer anne

From book #1, these are elongated corded rib. This 4-stitch pattern knits up to a lovely scrunchy fabric. The Schaefer Anne is soft, and compared to the book photo, the rib took on a completely different definition (she used Gems Opal). I'm very happy with this pair.

schaefer anne in a corded rib

From book 1, this is a 4-stitch pattern. I like it so much, I knit the leg twice. Grrrr. Had to frog a little, no, a lot, because I couldn't judiciously frog such slidey yarn. I think I'm just used to my handspun. I needed to go back about 3/4" of the leg where I'd dropped two YOs. Fergit it. So, yesterday, I frogged back to the cuff and reknit the leg, turned the heel and finished the gusset. Moral to the story is: "Don't knit in the dark." We're knitting socks here, not growing mushrooms.

Ridged Feather Socks

After a weekend of doing--no exaggeration--about 12 loads of laundry after the kids returned from camp, I was happy to steal an hour of knitting time while watching a favorite HBO Show, "Big Love." I finished my Ridged Feather Socks--the first pair I've made from start to finish during "Summer of Socks," and I am very pleased with them.
I know some people prefer to match up the colors on variegated yarns like this so that the stripes are the same colors in the same placement on both feet, but I rather like the fact that mine don't synch up at all--that really shows that they're handmade, and I like the one-of-a-kind feel of them.

I have more of a skein left than I usually do with yarns like Socks that Rock, so I am thinking about eking out a pair of baby socks for Afghans for Afghans with the remainder...but that will have to wait.

I absolutely love these socks! In fact, I think they are my favorite pair to date. They are a combination of the 3 X 3 Cable Stitch with Moss Stitch and the Cable Braid with Garter Bead patterns, resulting in a 3 X 3 cable with a garter bead.

Broad Spiral, Stems, and Yarn Over Cable

Real life seemed to run out from under me the past few months, but now I've gotten some okay pictures of the socks I have finished over the past few months (May-July).

Here is the Broad Spiral Ribbing. I thought I might have picked a bad pattern when I started knitting it, but it opens up when you wear it and looks a lot better. The yarn is Online Supersocke 100 Summer Color. Made toe up with a round toe and short row heel:

I need your help, please

I have started a new pair of socks. I love this yarn, the muted colors are absolutely lovely, and it is creating a very nice color pattern. I started doing a BasketWeave knit on the top of the foot, but I'm not sure if this is a waste of my time. Is it getting lost in the colorway? Am I loosing the overall effects of the colors by adding a texture? Or does it look fine, keep going. Hubby likes the BasketWeave and says keep going, but I also wanted your opinions. Thanks.

Crosshatch lace from moreSKS

I love these socks! After all my troubles they are wonderful. Here is a recap of what I did:
Pattern : Crosshatch Lace from mSKS
Yarn : Regia Bamboo, Jamaica #1066
Needles : started with 2.25mm moved down to 2.0mm, up to 2.5mm and finished with 2.25mm
Construction: Toe up Magic Cast On, Reversed Heel shaping, Hemmed cuff.
At 9.5sts/1" and foot measure 9.5" it looked as thought I should have 96 around. But this appeared too big, so I used 84. This was still too big, so when I got to the ankle I went down to 72sts. Although this is still quite loose, the hemmed cuff holds it in place. Next time I will go smaller than the book indicates.

Hi Everyone! I signed up for this KAL a month or so ago, but I haven't had time to post about the socks I was working on. I really enjoyed making these socks, and the pattern was super easy, and super easy to memorize!

The feet look really big in the picture, but I think part of the reason is the angle of the camera and the fact that the leg is ribbed which make those look smaller.

The pattern is the Yarn Over Cable on page 43. I used Paton's Kroy yarn (I think the colourway is called Krazy Stripes, but I'm not totally sure), and I think I used 2.75 mm DPNs.

I'll definitely make this pattern again - this time for myself. These socks went out to my Sockapalooza Pal. She's received them and said she loves them.

There are so many wonderful patterns in this book - so many to choose from that it's hard to choose just which one. I guess that means I'll just have to knit them all!

I am new to this KAL. I love the Sensational Knitted Sock books. I have made the baby cable socks and Stansfield #11. I am a fairly new sock knitter but I am having a blast. The top picture is the Stansfield #11 pair out of Lorna's Laces Shepherd Sport in the colorway Aslan. Openwork Rib Sock #1 Done

I finished the first sock and cast on the second one last night. The ribbing makes it fit really good.

This is a four stitch pattern from her first book - on page 37. More at my blog...

Comment answer: I used size 2 needles to get 8 stitches per inch and I cast on 72 stitches. My foot is like a size 8 1/2 shoe, so it depends on your foot size. The charts in the book can help you figure out how many to cast on and it also depends on the gauge of yarn you are using. Some yarns are thicker and some thinner and that would change your needle size and cast on.

Frogtastic Surf Socks

I blogged a little while ago about my Chevron socks that needed to have their entire legs frogged. Thanks for the kind comments people left about the socks. I finally frogged them on Tuesday, and knit on nothing but them all week. These socks involved a whole lot of frogging, not to mention they broke my size 1 Crystal Palace bamboo circular, and I was anxious to get them finished and off the needles.

Hello KAL! This is my first post, I think. I FINALLY have a finished object to share. This pair was taken from More Sensational Knitted Socks. I used a variegated sock yarn for the Seeded Ribbing Check and Plain Seeded Ribbing from the 4-stitch patterns. The heel flap was supposed to be the Eye of Partridge with German Chain Selvage from pg 67 in the book - but I'm fairly certain I have it inside-out. I like it anyway though! Openwork Rib Four-stitch ribbing pattern

This is my first sock done from the Sensational Knitted Socks book. It is a four-stitch pattern on page 37.

The yarn is Seacoast Handpainted purchased from the Loopy Ewe. The color is Penstemon. This colorful yarn is handpainted in New Hampshire .60% Merino, 30% Bamboo, 10% Nylon approx. 400 yards7-8 st. /1", US 1-2 (2.25 mm - 2.75 mm).

I didn't want a detailed pattern that would get lost in the variegated yarn, so I chose a simple rib with little eyelet airholes for summer. I love this yarn, the bamboo in it makes it light.

Hi all, I've been reading this knitalong blog for a while now but haven't had anything to show - and now I've only got the one sock to show as well! Its mate is under construction...

I cast these on back in February. I don't get to knit very often as I'm a single mum and work fulltime, so knitting is done in 5 mins here and there and not even that every day. I had to unpick this sock twice as well - the first time I got as far as the heel flap when I realised I'd made a mistake. They were supposed to be a birthday present for my dad back in March (I realise now that that was rather optimistic ;-) but he knows I'm making him something and also how busy I am, and he doesn't seem to mind waiting.

They're the garter stitch rib in Shelridge Farm Charcoal, I cast on 62 stitches and am hoping for the best - not been able to fit them! They're too big for me and he's definitely got bigger feet than me...! I loved the yarn and the simplicity of the stitch - made a nice change from the usual rib.
I had terrible trouble with grafting the toe stitches together, I got the hang of it in the end but the end result is not as perfect as I'd hoped. I suspect with practice it'll get to look better.

I enjoy reading about everybody else's knitting and if it hadn't been for the several sock knitting blogs I read, this sock would probably not had got finished!

I haven't made the mate to this sock because I am trying to finish up Christmas sock presents. I have young children so I don't have as much time to knitas I would like.

This is from SKS. I used Lacy Rib from the 5 stitch patterns. I made it the toe up way she said in the book and it was hard as I have never done it that way before. I learn something new everyday though. The yarn is so yummy, Cherry Tree Hill in Old Rose. My first time knitting with it. One more thing, I made a rolled cuff because I thought it went well with the lacy pattern.

Chevron Pattern

This illustrates a pair of socks I was knitting in Regia Surf Color, just before I pulled the needles out. The entire legs will need to be frogged. The chevron pattern is so tight I can't fit these socks over my heel. Unfortunately I didn't try the socks on until I had knit the entire leg and the cuff. Since I had decided to do an afterthought heel, it wouldn't have fit right, so I never bothered. Just before binding off, though, I gave it a shot and was horrified to find out I couldn't even put them on. I always knit this weight of yarn in a size one and it never occured to me that this pattern didn't have enough give. In retrospect, I should have gone up a size on the legs. These socks have been sitting since May, while I mourned the disaster, and finally I've gotten back to them, ready to start over on the legs, well, as soon as I finish a couple other socks, of course.

I see plenty of people have knit with this pattern, so I seem to be unique in having this problem.

Thank you to all the well wishes. I'm feeling a little better and now I have a co-host, so hopefully the KAL will kick back off. I'll be working on getting people's names and blogs into the sidebar this week and hopefully we'll be able to keep invitations rolling out in a timely manner now.

I haven't been working on socks much lately, but I finally finished a non-SKS pair and have just started another pair.

I'm using the pattern called Stansfield 14 from More Sensational Socks. I think it gives this yarn just enough texture to be interesting. I really like how it's turning out.

These socks have been on the needles for quite some time. I kept neglecting them for other projects, then I had needle issues (at one time or another, I have used dpns, 2 circs and magic loop to get these done). But they fit like a DREAM and I love how this Garter Rib pattern showcases the colorway.

My lovely friend Cindy custom-dyed this yarn for me as a gift. Just one of many beautiful yarns she's got at her etsy shop Cherry Blossom Fibers.

I have been following this blog for a while but just joined. I love the book(s) and use them often as reference books. So far I have only made one pair of socks straight out of the book-- the Cross Hatch lace pattern from More SKS. I ended up unhappy with this pair but only b/c the yarn I used (Knit Picks Bare) didn't hold up well at all. I love the pattern. I plan on making many more pairs from the book as I have time.

Hi, I'm Liana from Tennessee in the US and I absolutely adore knitting socks. I am working on a pair at the moment (2nd sock actually) from the first book and it's an 8-row repeat called Purled Ladder. I am using a solid navy color (Jawoll Lang) to maintain the beautiful textured look.

I also make my socks primarily to wear with work dress shoes, so I use 0's on the foot part and usually 2's or 3's on the leg part. I'm glad to be a part of this group, and my next sock is from the 2nd book, which of course is already in my possession. I love her books and am planning on taking mine to bind it differently so that it will lay open. You can view my blog here.

I've had some health issues; I don't think it's anything serious, but it's been draining me of a bit of energy lately. BUT there's a light. Garter Rib Socks

These are my first socks for the KAL, and my second pair of socks ever. I used Cider Moon's Glacier weight yarn in Banana Cabana.

I had so much fun knitting these, and my kids love them so much, that they promptly put in orders for pairs.

These could be very elegant in a solid color sock yarn. I'm a firm believer in knitted socks being fun, though! At least for now.

Regarding DHs' Walking Socks he absolutely adores them. He loves the fact that I made & designed them just for him & was very amused by the comments about hiding the pics from other DH's!

His new pair are being steadily worked on but as I'm working on 2mm needles the progress is painfully slow:

I've also found a partial solution to my DDs' boredom & frustration caused by her broken foot:

I made these socks for Children in Common, on a jeep trip last weekend. I knit whenever I get scared; believe me, it really helps. It is a 4-stitch pattern from More Sensational Knitted Socks, page 86. They are knitted in worsted weight Patons Classic Merino and the tan is a-lost-to-posterity-brand natural yarn that I tea dyed for a previous project. 2 socks on 2 circulars, sz5US.

When planning a pair of socks for my DH I had originally planned to use a pattern from Sensational Knitted Socks but with 10 stitches per inch & a foot width of 10" the yarn didn't 'carry' any of the available 5 stitch patterns. The fleck dominated & the patterns just didn't work. So I settled on a boring 3x2 rib. However that didn't last long as I got bored after 5 rows so I threw a cable in for good measure & repeated it every 4th row.

The 5 stitch patterns in Sensational Knitted Socks are all cuff down but I wanted to go toe up, so reused the heel that I discovered when knitting my Oriel Socks as I have found them really comfortable. This meant a bit of tinkering on the heel but I got there in the end. They were mainly knitted together on a 24" Knit Picks Classics Circular once I got past the toes but separated for the heels.

I reinforced the heel by using a slip stitch so hopefully they'll last in his walking boots. The socks fit his wide feet perfectly & the cable serves to pull the fabric in on his slender calves!

Gauge: 10 spi
Needles: 2x 3mm Knit Picks Classics Circulars
Technique: Toe up using the Turkish Cast On, two socks at once on circular needles. A reverse slip stitch heel flap & finished off with a stretchy bind off (scroll down to the red text).

Amazingly I even managed to get the stripes to match:

From Sensational Knitted Socks, this is another fun pattern that knits up quickly if you commit to it. I started these on February 5th and kept putting them aside for other projects and finished this evening (5/31). I used Nature Spun Sport as a test yarn for a sock class. They are comfy, cot but since I have a terrible habit of throwing socks in the wash I'm sure I won't be using it again.

These, my first socks ever, only took an entire semester to finish (including all the requisite first-time froggings). Finished the pair and my senior thesis almost instantaneously (and immediately went out and bought more pretty yarn to celebrate).

Crosshatch Lace Socks Done

I knit the Crosshatch Lace pattern from More SKS in this orange Trekking. I knit the legs with 72 stitches on size 0's and the feet with 68 stitches on size 1's. This is a great pattern, easy to memorize and fun to knit.

I'm working on these socks along with a few other pairs. The stitch pattern is on page 96 of More SKS. I'm using Regia cotton/wool blend yarn and size 2.0 mm needles. It's a 12 round repeat pattern, but all of the odd rounds are plain stockinette and the other six are all variations of the same combination of increases and decreases. I used an eye of partridge heel flap and am continuing the stitch pattern on the instep to the toe.

Scrolls Socks (from More SKS)

I have finished my Scrolls socks from More SKS. I finished the first one in April but got sidetracked by other projects and finally finished the second sock today.

The pattern reminds me of ripples in puddles and so I thought it went perfectly with the yarn I had from Posh Yarn in last month's sock club - it's the April Showers colourway.

I knitted these toe up with short row heels on 2 x 2.75 mm Inox Grey circs. It's a 14-row pattern but knits up surprisingly quickly.

Yes, I hung my sock in a bush! It's the only place with some decent light at 7pm here. :) Sorry it's not on a sock blocker, but it's a size 7 and won't fit on my big size 10 blockers. :)
This pattern was very easy to memorize, and I'm down to the heel on the second sock. It's one of the 4-stitch patterns in Charlene's SKS book. Next...something from More SKS for a secret swap pal.

I don't know if socks from the More Sensational Knitted Socks count, but I have finished a pair. I knit the Scroll Socks with my own heel and toe. The are knit in Blackberry Ridge Mer-Made Fingering wt in the Tropical Fish colorway. Size 1 addi turbos. They are a fun sock to knit and the pattern is very easy to memorize.

My first post here, and first sock pattern from this great book....I feel so honored to join in the SKS pool of lovely socks.

I chose the Garter Rib socks pattern - this is the first of many pairs to be sure.

I'm only finished with Sock 1 so far, but #2 is not far behind. I modified the pattern only a little by continuing the garter rib pattern down the top of the foot past the toe decreases. The yarn is Sangria; a merino superwash that was hand-dyed by my good friend over at Cherry Blossom Fibers. I used the 2 circulars method with Knit Picks size 1 (2.5mm) needles. (LOVE these).

This was quite the relaxing knit, but I'm sure you sock veterans know that already :)

A question about elastic

I wanted to get some opinions on adding elastic to cotton socks.

My first Swedish Block Sock in the 4 ply cotton is at the cuff stage, but I didn't want to do a plain ribbed top and just have it fall down. I've never done a pure cotton sock before, but I wanted to try it for experiment's sake. Ribbing alone doesn't seem like it would be enough with this yarn.

I was thinking of doing a fold over hem at the top with a narrow elastic band inside, like you see with knit skirts. I just haven't had the strength to do it yet! I wanted to know if anyone had any other suggestions. If you have links to other people that have done the same, those would appreciated as well!

2 Socks From the New Book

I got the More Sensational Knitted Socks book a couple of weeks ago and got started on some socks right away. This is the result so far: In Trekking (orange sock) I'm knitting the Crosshatch Lace pattern (72 stitches on 0's). This is a wonderful lace pattern and so easy to knit. The second is the six stitch Pennant pattern (there are 4 or 5 different pennant patterns in this book). I'm knitting Opal Prisma 1190 for this sock (66 stitches on 1's). I've cast on for both second socks, I'm trying to get them done before the end of the month. Wish me luck!

Sock #1 of an SKS pair

I finished one Bluebell Lace ribbed sock in merino/tencel from Yarn Pirate in the Daisy colorway. I have the ribbing and one repeat of the second sock done. The first photo shows the colors well, and the second shows the pattern. The yarn is soft and shiny--these are going to be a pleasure to wear.

Here's two socks that I am working on. The first is Online Summer Color sock yarn (color 789), a cotton/wool/nylon blend, in the Broad Spiral Rib pattern from More Sensational Knitted Socks. The second sock is the Swedish Blocks pattern, in Rowan 4 ply Cotton in Fennel. I frogged these yarns many times trying to find a pattern I could stick with for them, so I hope these work out.

The Broad Spiral Rib sock uses a round toe, and the loop-de-loop cast on, the other is Magic cast on starting with 8 stitches. Both are 60 stitch socks.

I couldn't get a good pic of the Stems socks, but it's one down, one to go on those. These two patterns have pulled me away from it for a while.

Waffle Rib Socks Done

I've finished another pair of socks using a pattern in the book. Using Regia Nordic Color #5521, I made some slightly modified Waffle rib pattern socks. I just used the pattern in groups of three instead of continuously down the sock.

Hello everyone.

My name is Amy, and I just got my invitation to this knitalong this week.

When I bought the first Sensational Knit Socks book, I didn't know what I was in for. That book really changed my knitting life. My socks fit and they're not too tight at the cuff, and it's about all I knit anymore. Socks are portable and I have a better chance of finishing than most other projects, even though I still want to make a few sweaters I'm not embarrassed to wear (I've only got one right now). Plus I have a lot of sock yarn to burn through. The 'sock yarn doesn't count as stash' thing just doesn't apply to me! I've finished a good number of projects from SKS, most of them before I got a digital camera and a blog. I finished a couple of Garter Rib Anklets and one Waffle Rib sock this year so far, and plain stockinette socks using the Fair Isle instructions.

The second book is even more fun than the first, and I started a project from it a couple of weeks ago, in anticipation of getting in on the knitalong. It's a sock in the 'Stems' pattern knit in DK weight yarn. The first sock is done, and hopefully I'll get a good picture of it this weekend to show progress. I'm slowly going through the leg on the second one, because I haven't had much knitting time lately.

Hopefully I'll be very active there. It's the first knitalong I've truly participated in. I got really sick during Socktoberfest and couldn't get anything done that month, so I'm going to make up for it!

April Showers

Here are the current socks I'm knitting from More SKS - "Scrolls" from page 95.

The yarn is Posh Yarn's Lucia, April's sock club yarn in the "April Showers" colourway. As soon as I saw this yarn, I knew I wanted a pattern that looked like ripples on water. Then I spotted the "Scrolls" pattern in More SKS and my next pair of socks was sorted. ;-)

I love this pattern because it has so much texture and the subtle colour changes in the yarn doesn't overwhelm it.

I'm already planning my third pair - either "Travelling Vine" on page 95 or "Baby Fern" on page 101. A friend I worked with years ago is 72 next week and her favourite colour is green, and I just happen to have 2 balls of green Sirdar Town and Country in my stash. ;0) so the next ones will be for her.

Hello all! Just a quick note to say Welcome to all the new members. I just sent out a bunch of invitations this morning, but it might be a couple of weeks before everyone shows up on the sidebar. I've been out of town for the past week and am trying to get caught up. I tried putting a big batch of names up on the sidebar before we left, but forgot to save it before I closed the window and lost all my work. Brilliant, huh? (But, unfortunately, very typical of me.) So I have lots of names to catch up on. Once I'm done, I'll ask if I missed anyone.

Other than that, my More Sensational Knitted Socks was waiting for me when I got back and oh, it's a wonderful book as well. Can't wait to see what people make from it!

Alternating 2x2 Rib

Finally another finished pair of SKS socks. The Alternating 2x2 Ribs using Mountain Colors 4/8's Wool in the Sweet Lavender colorway.

These socks were worked toe-up using the Easy Toe cast-on on size 4 Brittany dpn's over 56 stitches for the body of the sock with a plain foot and patterning above the ankle. For the heel, I used the yarnover short-row heel by Priscilla Gibson-Roberts. The ribbing was worked using 3.0 mm Holz & Stein rosewood dpns'. The socks are a women's size 9.5 and used almost the entire skein. I had about a yard and half remaining.

The pattern is quick 4 stitch repeat that while simple isn't boring. Normally I don't knit socks in worsted weight and have never used the 4/8's. This was a teaching project that turned out to be a pleasure.

This is the Grapevine pattern on page 96 of More SKS and is my first pair of socks from this book. The pattern looks much better IRL, it's difficult to get a decent photo of it.

I knit these using Posh Yarn's Lucia sock yarn in the March Hare colourway (March's sock club yarn). I used 2 x 2.75 mm Inox grey circs.

I used my usual toe up pattern, not the one in the book.

These knitted up extremely quickly and only took 4 days to complete, and that wasn't working

on them constantly either. The fastest pair of socks I've ever made for myself, I think.

I've just cast on for my second pair - Scrolls on page 95 - again with Posh Yarn Lucia in the April Showers colourway (April's sock club yarn) but I haven't done enough to warrant a photo yet. ;0)

Thanks, Alison, for sending me an invitation. I'm a big fan of Charlotte's books.

I finished the spiral toe (book 2) on sock two of my double spiral socks. I used 76 stitches for the ribbing and 84 for the pattern, which had a repeat of 14 stitches. 70 stitches would not have fit my ankle, but it would probably fit a normal sized ankle. I used 2.5 mm needles and navy solid Knitpicks Essentials with a Regia color yarn. I used just over one skein of the navy yarn and a little less than one skein of the Regia. Someone with normal sized ankles would have no problem knitting the pair from one skein of each yarn. Sport weight yarn and 56 stitches would probably work too.

I'm using the Double Spiral mosaic (slip stitch) design from Sensational Knitted Socks. I'm quite happy with the look of the heel and gusset on this pair. I've made several mosaic patterned socks and the gusset decreases always wreak havoc with the pattern. I think I almost solved the issue with this design. More Sensational Knitted Socks has more ideas that I'll use in future sock designs. It came in my Knitpicks order along with the second skein of navy Essentials yarn so I could finish sock two. I love all of the mosaic stitches in both books.

I finished the first socks I made with a book pattern on March 30th. My DH is wearing them to work today. Sorry for the bad pictures. I think I need a camera of my own. DD always has hers and I'm forced to use my scanner. I used the alternating 2 X 2 rib and a vintage Socka yarn in brown tweedy stripes. Boring socks to make but a very nice finished product. I've also started a pair of broad spiral rib socks from the new book in some vintage Opal yarn. I have to recommend this pattern. It's hard to see in the dark yarn but it looks great. I am just using a plain K4, P2 rib on the foot portion of the sock instead of the baby cable rib on the leg. More pictures when I'm finished.

This is my first pair of socks from SKS2. I am enjoying the 10-stitch pattern (only a 4-row repeat, hence the reading of Helen of Troy whilst knitting!). I'm doing them two at once, using two circular needles. It feels slower but for me is probably faster in the long run.

I was worried at first that the knit/purl chevrons would get lost in the Trekking XXL stripes, but now that I'm a few inches in, I really like how the stitch pattern makes the yarn look very nubbly and tweedy.

I haven't posted in a loooong time because I have been working on other KALs, along with all the other life events that go on.

Even though I don't think I will ever tire of this book, or knit all the socks from it, I (in a weak moment) acquired both More Sensational Knitted Socks and Favorite Socks from IK. They are very different but both wonderful. This sock-knitting obsession is reasserting itself, and I have finally realized I can never hope to knit as many in fingering yarn as I want to try.

So, starting now, I resolve to knit at least alternate patterns in worsted weight yarn and donate them to CIC. I have knitted for them a long time, but have also been neglecting them so I can resume with them as I resume here.

Resolved, yeah, and darn, I don't need any more worsted weight yarn either.

Question of the Week and Hostess Notes

Here's a question that I asked on my personal blog earlier in the week and thought it was pretty appropriate for here.

Do you darn your socks when they develop holes or do they get tossed?

For those of you interested in darning, but don't know how, here is a wonderful tutorial. It is much easier to repair an area that looks a little thin, but hasn't quite developed a whole yet. You just do duplicate stitches. Since most holes/thin areas are on the bottom of the foot, you don't even have to have the exact yarn you used for the sock. I do darn my socks. I'm getting enough in the rotation that I don't have to do it often, but it does occasionally happen and I just can't bear to part with any of my socks just yet. And it's just part of wearing handknit socks for me.

I'll ask some questions about the More Sensational Knitted Socks book once I get my copy. Mine's on order with another book that's not released for another couple of days. Hopefully, mine will show up soon. I've heard good things!

Well when I heard the book was finally available, I ordered it from amazon on monday and it just arrived. I gave a quick glance through and there are soooo many great patterns in it it's hard to decide which to knit first!

Mock Rib Socks

I am still waiting for my copy of More Sensational Socks to arrive but I love the first book. For some reason, I always seem to come back to the Mock Rib pattern. This is the pair that I just finished in Sweet Georgia's Still Water. I have another pair in the same pattern on the needles right now. Plus I have yet another pair in a different pattern from the first book also on the needles.

Hi, I'm Satori and though I am new to this KAL I am definitely not new to Sensational Knitted Socks. It's a wonderful book and I just ordered the More Sensational Knitted Socks yesterday.

Since the first book came out I've made about 6 pair of socks out of it. The picture below is the current pair. The 3x3 Cable with Moss Stitch. I'm using size 3 circulars and Austermann Bamboo Soft yarn.

I'm really looking forward to seeing all the beautiful socks that you are making.

I got my copy of the new book More Sensational Knitted Socks which I love as much as the first one! Here's my first project, that I knitted for my hubby:

My First SKS, and first socks in 3 years!

.This is my first post to this blog, and THIS is my first pair of SKS! I'm a newbie sock knitter, but an addicted sock knitter. I took a sock class in 2004 at a LYS, but couldn't make a sock at home. A friend from church recommended this book...and here they are my socks...a basic K2P2 ribbing in a 4 stitch repeat in Austermann Step...I really like the feel of this yarn. I wore them today to our homeschool co-op, and showed them to literally everyone. Thank you for all of your helpful hints and sharing your gorgeous socks in the posts...they're very inspiring to me, and now I'm starting another (and more challenging) pair soon...after my Monkey Socks, that is. :) I can't wait to see the MSKS book that I have on order. Keep the pictures coming of your socks!

I found this KAL after completing my first two-and-a-half pairs of SKS socks. The picture shows the first ones I finished: little tiny socks for my daughter, 48 stitches around, Lorna's Laces Lucky Stripe (the flash really killed the vibrancy of the colors!) on an Addi size 1 (magic loop).

Straight rib, except I made the heel flaps eye-of-partridge. I also played with some of the heel and instep details, since it seemed unlikely that Tabby would notice... I think I prefer having a two-stitch wide purl valley just above the instep decreases (right sock), and including the garter edge on the heel flap (left sock) is definitely better than not (right sock).

The ones I made for myself, and the ones I'm making for my husband, are also super-plain K2P2 rib. I can't wait to get done with his; I need to try something a little more interesting!

Beaded Rib Socks

Hi everyone! I discovered this group just as I finished my first pair of socks from the book. They're the Beaded Rib pattern, knit exactly as the pattern; toe up, short row toe and heel. I love these socks, and I really love the book. I tend to mess with patterns quite a bit anyway, so it's nice to have "recipes" for every method of sock knitting.

I used Wildfoote in a color called Mums; you can get all the gory details at my blog.

Next up I think will be the Garter Rib for my hubby, but I'll use the same construction as for these. It's the first pair I'll have made for him, so toe-up is the way to go; I'd hate to run out of yarn halfway down the foot!

Chevron Socks

I finished these Chevron Socks from Sensational Knitted Socks using the lightweight Socks that Rock in the Nodding Violet Colorway. The pattern was perfect for the striping found in the yarn. I love, love, love them! Very comfortable, and I get frequent comments about them from non-knitters. Usually the "Oh, those are cute. Will you make me some?" kind. I'm always willing to offer to teach that person to knit their own.
